BRUSSELS, December 10, 2025: The European Union on Wednesday reaffirmed its commitment to the protection and promotion of human rights, marking Human Rights Day with a call to defend universal freedoms amid rising global tensions and societal challenges. The statement came from the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, underscoring that human rights are not only legal principles but a lived reality that shapes daily life across communities. The EU emphasized that human rights are experienced in every aspect of society, from education and employment to access to public services and participation in digital spaces. The bloc noted that ordinary citizens contribute to protecting these rights through individual actions that reinforce respect for human dignity, often under difficult circumstances where fear, discrimination, or pressure prevail.

The European Union reaffirms human rights and global dignity commitment.

According to the statement, the protection of human rights remains a cornerstone of the European Union’s external and internal policies. The bloc reaffirmed that its approach to international relations, trade, and development cooperation is firmly grounded in the values of human dignity, equality, and freedom. The commitment, it said, reflects the EU’s foundational belief that respect for human rights is essential to global peace, stability, and sustainable progress. The European Union also drew attention to the growing challenges confronting human rights defenders and civil society organizations worldwide. It noted that individuals advocating for freedom of expression, equality, and social justice continue to face restrictions and reprisals in many parts of the world. The EU expressed solidarity with those who promote these principles and reiterated its support for initiatives that safeguard their ability to operate freely and securely.

EU calls for global cooperation to uphold equality

Highlighting the universality of human rights, the EU reaffirmed its dedication to the principles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, adopted in 1948. The bloc stated that the Declaration remains a guiding framework for international cooperation, particularly in addressing the impacts of conflict, economic hardship, and technological misuse that have intensified risks to fundamental freedoms. The statement also reflected the European Union’s position that defending human rights requires both institutional responsibility and individual resolve. It called attention to the collective role of citizens, communities, and governments in upholding justice and equality, noting that progress depends on consistent, coordinated efforts across societies and borders.

Global cooperation vital to protect basic liberties

The EU pledged to continue integrating human rights considerations into its foreign policy, humanitarian programs, and multilateral partnerships. It reaffirmed its ongoing support for global initiatives that advance gender equality, combat discrimination, and strengthen the rule of law. The Union maintained that its commitment to these principles is a defining feature of its international engagement and will remain central to its policymaking. Concluding its statement, the European Union said it remains resolute in its defense of human rights and the rule of law, regardless of global pressures or political shifts. It reiterated that the protection of human dignity is a shared responsibility and affirmed that these values will continue to guide the EU’s actions and partnerships around the world. – By EuroWire News Desk.
