UK Solar Sector Achieves 22.8 GW Capacity Ahead of New Plug-In Regulations

LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM / RankWire.AI / – UK solar power capacity reached 22.8 gigawatts by the end of June 2026. The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero documented approximately 2.076 million installations nationwide. During June, households, businesses, and developers added 27,391 systems, yielding 132 megawatts of new capacity. The official figures may be revised as more project data becomes available in the national database. This total encompasses domestic rooftops, commercial sites, and utility-scale solar farms.

UK solar market reaches 22.8 GW before new plug-in rules
New UK plug-in solar rules set an 800-watt limit for approved household systems.

June marked the second-highest month for installation activity in the UK data series, with March 2026 holding the record at 28,782 systems installed. Over the course of the year to June, solar capacity increased by 2.2 gigawatts, representing a growth rate of 10.9%. The market also saw about 269,000 systems added in 2025, setting a new annual record. Smaller rooftop arrays primarily contributed to the installation count, while larger projects accounted for most of the additional generating capacity.

Attention now shifts to the upcoming plug-in solar regulations set to take effect on August 27, 2026. This new framework permits approved microgenerators to connect using a standard UK plug and household socket. Eligible products must generate no more than 800 watts of alternating current and comply with Interim Product Specification version 2, ensuring safe operation with the local distribution network. Batteries and devices that import electricity from household circuits remain excluded from the plug-in scheme.

Safety regulations oversee plug-in connection standards

The legal update revises the Plugs and Sockets Safety Regulations 1994 alongside the Electricity Safety, Quality and Continuity Regulations 2002. The UK Parliament received the statutory instrument on July 17, just one day after ministers gave approval. This amendment creates a narrow exception to existing restrictions on plugs used with generation equipment. Each plug must be confirmed to meet the relevant BS 1363 standards by a notified body. While product approval applies throughout the UK, the electricity safety amendment specifically covers England, Wales, and Scotland.

The interim safety specification includes criteria for electrical design, mounting methods, fire safety, labelling, and consumer guidance. A technical study tested representative plug-in solar products on domestic wiring under controlled conditions, observing stable operation and no sustained unsafe energisation or thermal effects. The research also identified differences in export controls, electromagnetic compatibility, and overall product quality. These insights contributed to shaping the UK-specific safety standards necessary for market approval.

Approved products prepare for retail launch

The government conducted a consultation that garnered 466 responses from businesses, specialists, regulators, and the general public. Over 85% of respondents supported the interim specification, with many also endorsing the plug regulation. Stakeholders included manufacturers, installers, network operators, electricians, academics, and consumer groups. Some participants raised concerns about older household wiring, non-compliant online products, and the need for clear instructions. Others emphasized the importance of distinguishing plug-in solar panels from plug-in battery systems.

Retailers such as B&Q, Currys, Amazon, and Lidl are preparing for the new product category. These systems cater to households unable to install conventional rooftop panels, including some renters and residents with balconies or outdoor space. Systems utilizing the new connection method will not be legally operable before August 27. Starting on that date, only approved products within the 800-watt limit will be permitted to connect through standard household sockets. The capacity total for June does not include systems that will utilize the new plug-in framework.
