VIENNA, AUSTRIA / RankWire.AI / – Austria is preparing BEACONSAT, the country’s first military satellite and its largest domestically developed spacecraft to date. The satellite will detect and analyze interference affecting global navigation satellite systems, including GPS and Galileo. Austria plans to launch BEACONSAT in February 2027 aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. The project focuses on identifying jamming and spoofing signals from orbit and gathering data on when and where navigation systems face disruption.

Austria readies BEACONSAT military satellite for 2027 launch
Austria’s BEACONSAT project centers on detecting GNSS interference from orbit.

Within a multi-year research and development initiative, BEACONSAT will function as a technology demonstrator. Jamming describes radio interference that hampers or degrades satellite navigation signals, while spoofing involves transmitting false navigation data that can cause receivers to determine incorrect positions. Satellite navigation supports systems such as aircraft, ships, vehicles, drones, and emergency services. The Austrian Defence Ministry anticipates that the mission’s data will enhance operational processes and deepen its understanding of GNSS interference issues.

The BEACONSAT project is led by GATE Space, a Schwechat-based space technology enterprise that assumes overall responsibility for the mission. The company, established in 2022 as a TU Wien spin-off, specializes in developing chemical propulsion systems enabling satellites to maneuver in orbit. For this project, GATE Space provides the propulsion unit, satellite structure, and thermal management technology. The firm has conducted over 8,000 hot-fire engine tests near Vienna Airport under atmospheric and vacuum conditions.

Core Satellite Technology from Austria Drives Mission

Key systems for Austria’s inaugural military satellite come from other European companies. Graz-based IGASPIN supplies technology capable of detecting and analyzing GNSS interference with high precision. Denmark’s Space Inventor contributes additional satellite components, including the onboard computer. This initiative integrates commercial space hardware with systems developed specifically for the BEACONSAT demonstration mission. Austria’s Federal Ministry for Innovation, Mobility and Infrastructure has also supported GATE Space with approximately 750,000 euros in funding through Austria Wirtschaftsservice.

The European Space Agency plays a supportive and co-financing role via its ESA Marketplace program designed for technology demonstrations. This scheme allows commercial space technologies to undergo testing within security-related applications. Austrian officials describe BEACONSAT as a demonstrator, not an independent operational satellite. Its purpose is to collect data on interference impacting satellite navigation signals from orbit, with findings feeding into Defence Ministry processes as Austria enhances its military space capabilities.

Integration of BEACONSAT in Austria’s Broader Space Strategy

Austria’s Defence Ministry is establishing a dedicated space services unit covering satellite communications, navigation, and reconnaissance. BEACONSAT is a part of this emerging framework, with a specific focus on navigation interference. The ministry’s military space plan envisions an expansion from using space services to operating space infrastructure and systems. This strategy, adopted in 2023, envisions implementation extending through 2035 and beyond.

Scheduled for launch in February 2027, the satellite will be carried into orbit by a Falcon 9 rocket. Once deployed, BEACONSAT will collect and analyze data related to GNSS interference as part of its research mission. The collaborative effort involves Austria’s Defence Ministry, GATE Space, and various European technology firms. This mission will mark Austria’s debut in military satellite deployment, showcasing domestically developed systems designed to monitor disruptions to GPS, Galileo, and other satellite navigation services.
