Data reveals that rising global temperatures significantly speed up evaporation from land and water bodies, creating a highly dry and unstable environment. Despite below-average spring precipitation, it was the temperature spikes caused by climate change that pushed the drought into a critical stage.

The World Weather Attribution group released a study illustrating how increasing temperatures deplete natural water reserves. Mariam Zachariah, a researcher at Imperial College London, pointed out that the drought is less about decreased rainfall and more about a warmer atmosphere inducing greater moisture deficits on land. This means that the risk of drought continues to escalate even when rainfall patterns remain stable. Scientists explain that for each 1 degree Celsius rise in temperature, the atmosphere’s capacity to hold water vapor increases by roughly seven percent.
