    Fire cuts power to 50,000 Berlin homes and businesses

    EuroWire, BERLIN: Power outages affected approximately 50,000 households and 2,000 commercial properties in the southwest of Berlin on Saturday after a fire damaged a high-voltage cable bridge near the Lichterfelde power station, according to Stromnetz Berlin, the city’s electricity network operator. The incident occurred on a cable bridge spanning the Teltow Canal, disrupting electricity transmission to several neighborhoods in the Steglitz-Zehlendorf district. Stromnetz Berlin reported that the fire caused significant damage to multiple underground and overhead cables, prompting emergency shutdowns to prevent further system overloads. Fire crews brought the blaze under control within hours, allowing engineers to begin assessing the damage and restoring power in stages.

    Local authorities said that emergency response teams, including the Berlin Fire Department and technical specialists from Stromnetz Berlin, worked throughout the day to secure the area and stabilize the network. Power supply was progressively reestablished across affected zones, though network operators warned that full restoration could take several hours due to the complexity of the infrastructure and safety inspections required before reconnection. Berlin police confirmed that an investigation has been launched into the cause of the fire. In a statement on the social media platform X, officials said the case is being treated as suspected arson, and forensic experts were deployed to examine the site.     The Lichterfelde power station, one of the main electricity hubs serving the southwestern part of the capital, plays a critical role in maintaining Berlin’s grid stability.     The Berlin Fire Department reported that thick smoke from burning insulation and cable materials made access to the bridge initially difficult. Firefighters used specialized equipment to extinguish the flames and cool the damaged sections of the structure before handing over the site to engineers for repair work. Environmental safety teams monitored air quality near the Teltow Canal, and no hazardous contamination was reported. Stromnetz Berlin said it was conducting a full technical assessment to determine the extent of the damage to the network’s underground and overhead cables. The operator added that power restoration was progressing according to plan, with most residential areas expected to be reconnected within the same day. Businesses affected by the outage were advised to check electrical systems before resuming full operations.

    The outage underscores the importance of securing energy infrastructure in major urban centers, particularly those involving bridge-mounted and cross-canal installations that connect critical supply routes. Berlin’s municipal authorities stated that infrastructure inspections will be reviewed in cooperation with federal energy regulators following the incident to ensure system reliability and resilience. As of Saturday evening, power was restored to most affected households and commercial premises, with remaining localized disruptions expected to be resolved as technical inspections conclude. Police confirmed that the investigation into the cause of the fire remains ongoing, with further updates to be released once forensic analysis is complete.

While outages of this scale are rare in the German capital, the quick containment of the fire and the phased restoration of service demonstrated the effectiveness of Berlin’s crisis management systems.
