EU Border Control Sector Sees 37% Reduction in Irregular Crossings Through July 2026

WARSAW, POLAND / RankWire.AI / – Preliminary data from European Union sources indicate that irregular border crossings into the EU decreased by 37% during the first seven months of 2026. Frontex’s initial figures show roughly 61,000 detections at the bloc’s external boundaries from January 1 to July 31, compared to the same period in 2025. Most of the main migration routes registered fewer crossings in this timeframe. These figures serve as the latest indicator of unauthorized entry activities at the EU’s external borders.

The Eastern Mediterranean remained the most active route, with 20,232 detections, marking a 28% decline from 28,068 during the same months last year. The Central Mediterranean followed with 16,454 detections, which is a 55% decrease from 36,656. Collectively, these two pathways contributed to approximately 60% of all detections reported in the EU entry totals. Libya persisted as the primary country of departure along the Central Mediterranean route during this period.

In contrast, the Western Mediterranean experienced an increase, with 11,217 detections, up 37% from 8,175 in the previous year. Sea crossings on this route reached 8,648, compared to 7,096 in 2025. Land-based detections up to June totaled 2,569, an increase from 1,079. The Western African route saw a 60% decrease, with 4,682 detections. Crossings through the Western Balkan region declined by 26% to 4,910, while detections at the Eastern Land Border dropped 44% to 3,209.

Mediterranean Routes Continue to Lead in EU Border Entries

Additional data concerning Channel crossings toward the United Kingdom also indicated a significant decrease. Frontex reported 22,469 attempted or successful crossings leaving the EU, which is a 46% reduction from 41,647. These Channel figures are not included in the EU entry totals. The agency additionally noted 281 detections on the circular route to Albania, showing a 9% increase. The reported figures for the first seven months exclude extraordinary border events in Ceuta, Spain, at the end of July.

Frontex based these figures on preliminary EUROSUR data and estimates available as of Aug. 4. The agency mentioned that future updates might alter these numbers as authorities revise their records. These statistics reflect detection counts, not unique individuals, meaning one person may be counted more than once if they cross at different points or on separate occasions. This distinction is relevant across the agency’s external-border dataset when comparing route totals with the total number of people involved.

The Seven-Month Data Continues the Decline Seen in the First Half of 2026

The current figures extend the trend Frontex observed after the initial six months of 2026, when the agency recorded over 49,000 irregular border crossings, also representing a 37% decrease year-over-year. At that time, detections along the Western Mediterranean were 17% higher than in the previous year, but the seven-month comparison shows a rise of 37%. The Western African route experienced a 67% decline through June, which further decreased to 60% by July.

Frontex reports that about 3,800 officers are deployed at the European Union’s external borders, assisting national authorities with border management and lifesaving sea operations. These officers also help enforce rules under the EU Pact on Migration and Asylum. The latest data reveal uneven trends across different routes, with most major corridors showing significant declines, except for an uptick observed along the Western Mediterranean route.
