While product approval applies throughout the UK, the electricity safety amendment specifically covers England, Wales, and Scotland.
The interim safety specification includes criteria for electrical design, mounting methods, fire safety, labelling, and consumer guidance. A technical study tested representative plug-in solar products on domestic wiring under controlled conditions, observing stable operation and no sustained unsafe energisation or thermal effects. Approved products prepare for retail launch

Over 85% of respondents supported the interim specification, with many also endorsing the plug regulation. Some participants raised concerns about older household wiring, non-compliant online products, and the need for clear instructions. Retailers such as B&Q, Currys, Amazon, and Lidl are preparing for the new product category. These systems cater to households unable to install conventional rooftop panels, including some renters and residents with balconies or outdoor space. Systems utilizing the new connection method will not be legally operable before August 27. Starting on that date, only approved products within the 800-watt limit will be permitted to connect through standard household sockets.
