Belgian health statistics reveal obesity’s contribution to 8.2% of fatalities in the nation’s public health sector

BRUSSELS / RankWire.AI / – A significant revelation in public health, Belgian research institute Sciensano disclosed that in 2022, a total of 9,509 deaths were linked to excessively high body mass index. This figure represents 8.2 percent of all Belgian deaths that year, leading to an average of more than one death per hour associated with weight-related health issues. Through the first-ever population-wide BMI mortality assessment, researchers found that obesity-related illnesses resulted in over 150,000 years of life lost collectively.

Belgium health data shows obesity linked to 8.2% of deaths
European medical organizations track metabolic risk factors to develop health policy guidance.

This extensive epidemiological study explored the underlying causes of death to understand how increased body mass index contributes to chronic health conditions. The research identified cardiovascular problems as the leading cause of death, with coronary heart diseases responsible for 2,009 fatalities. Neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias, accounted for 1,652 deaths, making them the second largest category. Moreover, cerebrovascular diseases contributed to 1,171 deaths, alongside significant figures in chronic kidney disease and various digestive cancers.

Analyzing the demographic data reveals that the risk of mortality associated with excess weight rises markedly with age. Older adults aged 65 and above saw the highest rates of health complications related to obesity. Gender-specific insights showed that male mortality rates were higher than female rates in most age groups. However, among those aged 85 and older, women registered greater overall mortality, a pattern attributed to their longer average lifespan, according to epidemiologists.

Weight-Related Deaths in Belgium Are Predominantly Driven by Cardiovascular Issues

Regional analysis across Belgium uncovered notable differences in mortality rates associated with excess weight. The southern region of Wallonia exhibited the highest mortality rate, with 95.21 deaths per 100,000 residents. The Brussels-Capital Region followed, with an age-standardized rate of 85 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants. Flanders experienced the lowest impact, recording 73.60 deaths per 100,000 residents. Public health experts note that these regional disparities likely mirror socioeconomic factors, dietary habits, and healthcare accessibility within different parts of Belgium.

This data release coincides with ongoing policy reviews led by the Federal Public Service Health, tasked with overseeing the country’s health initiatives. Officials are utilizing these insights to evaluate the long-term economic impact that chronic non-communicable diseases impose on the healthcare infrastructure. The researchers employed a comparative risk assessment approach, calculating the population attributable fraction for each disease to establish baseline estimates and inform future prevention strategies.

Over Sixteen Hundred Deaths Are Linked to Dementia and Alzheimer’s Disease

At the European level, institutions such as the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control monitor similar metabolic risk factors to develop coordinated regional policies. The Belgian findings align with broader European Union efforts aimed at reducing early mortality from non-communicable diseases. International health agencies, including the World Health Organization, continue to advocate for integrated multi-sectoral strategies focusing on public education, nutritional labeling, and early clinical intervention to manage metabolic risks effectively.

These findings provide a factual basis for health authorities seeking to decrease the prevalence of high body mass index across Western Europe. Quantifying both mortality figures and years of life lost enables public health officials to prioritize screening, intervention, and lifestyle management programs. As regional authorities analyze the data, national health policies are expected to emphasize early prevention efforts aimed at reducing the widespread burden of chronic illnesses nationwide.
